Friends of the Library are community-based non-profit
groups of citizens who promote, encourage and
enhance the work of their local libraries. In
Washington State, over 150 Friends of the Library
groups raise several hundred thousands of dollars
annually to supplement the funding of local libraries,
a large portion of it through community activities.
Their members volunteer thousands of hours of
their time to libraries.
In Spokane County Library District there are active
Friends of the Library organizations affiliated
with most branches. All are incorporated as non-profit,
tax-exempt organizations.
Local Friends' activities have included sponsorship
of special library programming, book discussion
groups, support of the District's summer reading
and other youth programs, providing refreshments
at special events, and support of volunteer and
staff recognition activities. Their major fundraising
activity is used book sales.
Spokane County Library District's Friends of the
Library Policy encourages the organization of
Friends groups to-
Create public interest in the library
Support and promote knowledge of the District's
mission, goals, services, and resources;
Foster public support for development of
the library so it may adequately serve the needs
of community residents.
Membership in Friends groups is open to all community
residents and all library users.
